November Ahoy!

It’s fast approaching with the power of the wind. Hoister the main sail, secure the anchor! We’re in for one rough ride.

That’s right folks, November will soon be upon us. Don’t let October fool you, it wont stay long when November charges through. But what’s so special about November I hear you ask?

Oh November, the month of dark nights spent curled up on the sofa with a good book in hand and hot chocolate in your mug. The month where staying is all we ever want to do – but what if you could do all that and then some? What if you recently discovered that you want try and challenge yourself, that you want to push yourself into trying something new? Have you ever thought – One of these days I’m going to write a book? You have, but you haven’t started yet, is that what you’re saying? Well, November is the perfect month for you!

As November reaches its hold right across the globe, thousands upon thousands of people will be eagerly waiting the turn of midnight on November 1st. For November marks the the month of writing. It is – National Novel Writing Month – to be more precise on the matter. The month long event is to show you that you can indeed write a novel of 50,000 words or more in 1 month. It doesn’t need to be good, it wont be a best seller – heck it doesn’t even need to be complete. All it needs is 50,000 words and you’re well on your way to having something that you can later work on and perhaps sell. But don’t be fooled, when the end of the month comes and you have reached your target – don’t assume that your work is done. Hell no, it has only just begun. If you want to sell that novel you’ll need to go back and thoroughly edit what you have written, which presumable after a month of hard going you will end up writing the whole thing over again.

Trust me, I feel this pain even now as I write this. But don’t let that discourage you. Even now, thousands are gearing up for the month long writing madness. I know I am and I can’t wait for it come. My idea is firmly taking root within my mind is at the point where if November doesn’t come quicker it will burst out and have me writing it – whether I want that or not. You do not deny the crazy muse that tells you when to write through fear of literary abandonment – those dark nights of November are no fun on they’re own.

If only you could see what flows in the creative banks of my mind – you may end up running for the hills and retreating back to your own creative caves. The planning is fully under way and I must return to the characters that want to tell me what will happen and how it’s going to happen that way.

Are you tempted? Do you want to see what I’m talking about for yourself? Then why not head on over to NaNoWriMo and prepare to be amazed.

  1. Hey Jennifer … Read your blog … fascinating concept … I’m halfway through an adaptation, but I’m going to plan on doing this in 2013 … I love the concept … I love the challenge… I actually wrote a 100k+ novel in science fiction in about a month back in 1997 … It was published in 2012 … I know writing a strong 50k would be tougher now… I’d like to revisit the experience … intense … 😉 GMB

    • I thoroughly enjoyed it last year. I managed to hit the 50k target in 5 days and ended up with 111k by the end of the month. I know I wont get as much done this year due to other commitments and timing but I’ll give it a good go 🙂

  2. Don’t get me started, I still haven’t planned the individual chapters!
